| Shankarachariya Temple |
The
shankarachariya temple also known as Jyesteshwara
temple is located on the summit of the Takhat
–E – Suleiman hill overlooking
Srinagar town. The temple dates back to
200 B.C.E although the present structure
probably dates back to the 9th century C.E.
Stone stairs up to temple were constructed
by Dogra ruler, Maharaja Gulab singh. In
the recent times a motor able road has been
constructed to facilitate the pilgrims.
Khir Bhawani Temple
Located at a distance of 18 Km. from Srinagar,
at Tullamula is an important Hindu Shrine,
associated to goddess,Ragnya Devi. An annual
festival is held here on Jesht Ashtami (May-June)
when hindus visit the shrine in large numbers
to offer prayers and seek the blessings
of the Deity. |

Aventpur,
located 29 Km. southeast of Srinagar, was founded
by king Avantivarman who reigned from AD 855 -
883. The site has two temples. The larger one,
Shiva-Avantishvara, is marked by massive walls
some half a mile beneath the town on the outskirts
of village Jaubror. The subsidiary shrines are
to the rear corner of the courtyard. But the complex
has, over the years, lost its grandeur and has
been reduced to ruins, though it is still visited
by the devout. |

Amarnath is
one of the most famous shrines in Hinduism, believed
to be an abode of lord Shiva, located at a distance
of 48 Km from Pahalgam at an altitude of 13000
ft above sea level, can be reached by a 4 days
trek. Other route to reah Amarnath is from Sonamarg
via Baltal, a long and hard full day trek. |

Hazratbal
Shrine is situated on the western bank of
Dal Lake (Bod Dal) with Nishat garden in
on the opposite banks. The shrine is a combination
of Kashmiri and Mughal of architecture styles
in white marble. Its historical significance
dates to 17th century onwards; However the
present building is newly build. The building
is a combination of Kashmiri and Mughal
styles of architecture and has a historical
significance from 17th century onwards.
The distinctiveness of the Hazratbal Shrine
is that, it enshrines the sacred hair (Moi-e-Muqaddas)
of the prophet Muhammad, which is shown
to public only on special occasions. Friday
prayers are routine. |

It is one
of the oldest and the most spacious of all the
mosques in Kashmir, situated in the heart of the
city. The foundation of the mosque, an architectural
wonder was laid by Sultan Sikander in 1398 A.D.
The area of the mosque is 384ftX381ft. Spacious
enough for over thirty thousand people to offer
prayers at a time. |

The shrine
built on the right bank of the river Jhelum by
Sultan Sikander around 1400 AD in honor of Mir
Syed Ali Hamdani, the Muslim saint who popularized
Islam in Kashmir in Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist
styles . It is a wooden structure intricately
carved with religious sermons and historical inscriptions.

The tomb of
Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani (widely called Alamdar-e-Kashmir)
is situated 28 Km southwest of Srinagar. It is
the burial site of the saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din,
a pious who had traveled throughout Kashmir to
spread the religious message. It was built in
honor of the saint by the then ruler of Kashmir
Zain ul Abideen. The original wooden structure
gutted in devastating fire during 1995, has been
replaced by a concrete building. |
