OVERVIEW:

Tulian Lake Trek is Kashmir's most picturesque alpine lake trek. The lake is around 15 kilometres from Pahalgam and is located at an elevation of 3,684 metres (12,087 ft) above sea level, 16 kilometres southwest of Pahalgam, and 11 kilometres from Baisaran. It is flanked on three sides by mountains that climb to about 4,800 metres.

This is the primary attraction of Pahalgam. It is snow-covered in the winter and beautiful in the summer.. The Zanskar Range lies on one side of the lake and the Pir Panjal Range is on the other.The trek ascends all the way to the Tulian Valley.The lake has the shape of an 8 and is divided by a short inlet that links to the water supply. The colour of the water body stands in stark contrast to the surrounding snow-capped peaks and multi-colored mountain range. It's no surprise that it's one of the most recognisable attractions in the Pahalgam area.

Tulian Lake is located near Pahalgam, Kashmir.
Tulian Lake is located approximately 16 kilometres from Pahalgam at an elevation of nearly 3,353 metres. It is well-known for its serene surroundings, blueish green waters, and fantastic sightseeing opportunities, as it is located between the Zanskar and Pir Panjal mountain ranges. To get to the lake, though, you must go on a lengthy trek known as the Tulian Lake Trek, which includes high slopes.

Some tourists find it challenging, but it is achievable with regular exercise. Apart from taking in the breathtaking vistas of the mountains and the serene settings.Tulian Lake can be reached by a three-part hike.

The first section begins at the base camp. In the second section, you'll come across a magnificent valley nestled between two massive mountain slopes, with a river running through it. The Tulian Lake is finally reached in the third section.

Other activities can be enjoyed while on the journey. You can go camping or sit around a bonfire with your buddies and eat your cuisine while admiring the beauty of nature. Skiing in the snow and fishing are also options.  The lake is a treat for photographs. The trek to Tulian Lake is challenging because the area is covered in snow-capped peaks and dense forests, and ice chunks float in the lake.


The Tulian Lake walk is rated as easy to moderate. The walk includes stretches with a few ascents and descents that demand extensive planning. There are several mountain stream crossings along the way.

This hike is suitable for physically active individuals over the age of 12.The Tulian Lake walking track is not dangerous on its own. It does, however, have a few challenging stretches; the trail leading up to Kashmir Valley and Tulian Lake is unsigned.

It's easy to get lost in these sections. This hike requires the use of a local guide.

 

DETAILED ITINERARY FOR THE TULIAN LAKE TREK:

Tulian Lake Trek Day 0: Reaching the Base Camp - Pahalgam - Ganesh Bal

Pahalgam is around 100 kilometres from Srinagar. From Srinagar to Pahalgam, you can take a shared vehicle. Pahalgam is 2.5 kilometres away from Ganesh Bal. It is a little settlement located on the Lidder River's right bank. Because of its religious significance, devotees flock to this location.From Pahalgam, take a shared cab to Ganesh Bal. For the short trip from Pahalgam to Ganesh Bal, local transportation is available. You can spend the night in Pahalgam.

Day 1 Trek from Ganesh Bal to Chutiyaal Village on Distance: 7.5 km Time required: 4 hours

Trail types include grasslands and mountain streams.Prepare yourself for a long journey.The ascent begins at Ganesh Bal. The ascent is zigzagged from gentle to difficult. It is strongly advised that you navigate this terrain with the assistance of a guide. A wooden bridge is used to cross the river. Continue on the route for another 2.5 kilometres. Chutiyaal village is a lovely hamlet with a twist. There are no huts here. The peasants live in shelters constructed for their animals. The villagers are pleasant. Pitch your tents and spend the night here.

 

Day 2 Trek from Chutiyaal Village to Kanimol 6.5 kilometres
Time required: 4 hours

Trail types include grasslands and mountain streams.Today, you'll be passing through Baisaran, known as India's "Mini Switzerland." The 2.5-kilometer section from Chutiyaal to Baisaran sets the tone for the rest of the day. Baisaran is a lovely, massive meadow that goes all the way up to the treeline.Pines and conifers thrive in dense clusters, providing majesty to the snow-capped mountains in the background. Shepherds can also be seen herding their flocks.The ascent from Baisaran to Kanimol is gradual to severe. The 4 km well-marked path leads you deep into the jungle. Gujjar cottages can be seen in the area. Breadayanghan is the name of this location. For the night, stay at Kanimol. A mountain creek near the campsite provides a useful source of water.


Day 3 Trek from Kanimol to Tulian Marag  Distance: 9 kilometres Time required: 8 hours

Trail types include grasslands and mountain streams.Get ready for a long day. The trail from Kanimol to Tulian Marag climbs steeply for 3 kilometres. The path through the jungle is tricky but lovely. Since the beginning, these forests have remained untamed. It's simple to see why this location has a primal vibe. To navigate the slick terrain, trek poles and good hiking shoes are required. Tulian Marag will be reached after 3.5 hours. Ideally, you should arrive at this location by 9.30 a.m. This location features a few huts made of stones and trampoline sheets. Tulian Marag is a great place to unload your baggage. Spend at least one hour here.
You might take a detour today to see the Ting mountain peak. The 3.5-hour journey to the summit is fraught with danger. The ascent is both difficult and exhilarating. The view from the peak is unparalleled; you get a bird's eye view of the Kashmir Valley, Chutiyaal Village, and Baisaran. The descent is difficult. It takes about 2.5 hours to return to Tulian Marag. Pitch your tents around the perimeter and spend the night here. It is an excellent camping location for stargazers.

 
Day 4: Hike from Tulian Marag to Tulian Lake, then return to Chutiyaal Village.
10 kilometres
Time required: 10 hours

Trail types include grasslands and mountain streams.
This is going to be a long and exhausting day, nonetheless, it is incredibly gratifying. Begin climbing upstream along the river's banks from Tulian Marag. The 1.5 km straight stretch will lead you to the valley's end. It takes about half an hour to go to this location. Take the track that diverges to the right from here. It's a sharp incline right away. There is no trail to follow. At this point, you must be accompanied by a guide. Continue trekking uphill for another 3.5 kilometres. The final section is littered with strewn with boulders. When you reach the summit of the slope,The summit reveals a mystery. Tulian Lake appears out of nowhere.
The turquoise waters of Tulian Lake (Altitude: 11,000 feet) stand in stark contrast to the surrounding snow-capped mountains. Spend an hour exploring the lake's shores. The lake's shadow is cast by the majestic mountains. When the light shines, the snow patches gleam. The scenery is mesmerizing.Return to Tulian Lake and take the shortcut to Chutiyaal village, which is 4 kilometres away. Spend the night in the village.

Day 5 Trek from Chutiyaal Village to Ganesh Bal on
Distance: 4.5 kilometres
Time required: 5 hours

Trail types include grasslands and mountain streams.Today is a short journey. The 4.5 kilometre segment follows the same path you took on Day 1. The day's hike usually takes a couple of hours to complete.If you are new to trekking, Tulian Lake is a fantastic place to start. In fact, it's the ideal one to progress to after a few Himalayan hikes. However, it does necessitate some sort of logistical help as well as extensive pre-trek planning and organisation. And as a beginner, you may be skilled at trekking but not at organising logistics or navigating your way through the path.As a result, embarking on a walk with an organiser could be a fantastic option.


BEST TIME FOR THE TULIAN LAKE TREK?

This journey is best taken between March and October.


REQUIREMENTS FOR TULIAN LAKE TREK: Tulian Lake Trek is rated as easy to moderately challenging. This hiking trail does not present any significant obstacles. The highest point on this walk is 11,000 feet, near Tulian Lake and Ting Peak. The distance traversed and altitude gained increase gradually throughout the walk, giving you plenty of opportunity to acclimatise.There are a few steep sections of the trail, particularly the climbs from Chutiyaal Village to Kashmir Valley and Tulian Marag to Tulian Lake which necessitate consistent preparation and stamina.You can start by going for a daily jog.

This improves your lung capacity. Before beginning the walk, you should be able to jog 4 km in 25 minutes. It takes time to cross this distance in the allotted time. Begin slowly and gradually increase your pace each day. Swimming, cycling, and stair climbing with few breaks can also be beneficial.

Your leg muscles must be strong enough to handle the ascent from Tulian Marag to Tulian Lake. Perform three sets of squats to strengthen your legs. Each set should include 8 squats.Trekking with a backpack necessitates some effort as well as agile muscles. Stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles, and shoulders on a daily basis to help with this. You must arrive at the slopes with your muscles relaxed on your walk.

 


THINGS TO BRING ALONG?

Trekking Boots.Trekking shoes with solid traction and ankle support. Decathlon's FORCLAZ 100, 500, and 600 are highly recommended.

Clothes
Full-sleeve woollens (2 pairs, including the one you're wearing): We prefer fleece to wool because it's lighter, more compact,  warmer. It is preferable to layer your apparel with many light sweaters rather than carrying a single large heavy jacket.
Carry one full-sleeve windproof jacket/down jacket.
Trek pants (three pairs total): We recommend synthetic dri-fit pants because they are lightweight. Plus, when it's cold outside, you can layer one over the other
Cotton pants with multiple pockets or track pants might be an alternative. Jeans, shorts, and slacks are not appropriate for trekking.

T-shirts with collars (3 pairs, including the one you're wearing): Preferably light, full-sleeve t-shirts that protect the neck and arms from sunburn.
A lightweight poncho is ideal since, unlike raincoats, it also covers your bag. A poncho is required for the Rohil Basmai Valley Trek because light rain is expected.

Avoid using bright colours that will distract birds and animals.
Thermal inners: 1 lightweight upper and lower pair. Thermal inners are available as an option for those who are more sensitive to cold.

Accessories
Sunglasses: Curved ones will provide adequate coverage for your eyes. Blue-colored sunglasses are not recommended because they do not block UV rays. Blacks, greens, and browns are great. Avoid wearing multicoloured sunglasses.

Backpack(maximum weight of 9 kg): A backpack with strong straps should be carried. It is also recommended that you have a rain cover for your backpack because rain is prevalent at high altitudes.

Daypack (no more than 5 kg): A smaller foldable backpack will suffice on the day of the summit.

Females: You can bring your personal toiletries with you.There will be restroom tents where you may change. However, make sure you have ziplock bags on hand to collect your menstrual waste. There should be no littering in the mountains.

Carry all camera equipment, including backup batteries and a charger.

Plastic covers: Use plastic bags to compartmentalise items while packing, and keep a few extra plastic bags on hand for wet clothes.

4.Digene:If you believe you are unable to digest food, take this and notify your trek leader.
5.ORS): Drink a pack of ORS water at least once a day, preferably in the middle of your walk.

NEARBY PLACES TO VISIT:

1.LIDDER RIVER:

The Lidder River is regarded as one of the best picnic locations in Pahalgam, as well as an enticing water body that can capture anyone's attention. The Lidder River is a 73-kilometre-long river that flows from the Kolahoi Glacier at an elevation of 4653 metres.
It is a significant tributary of the Indus and a source of water.

It is also a popular destination for adventure sports including river rafting, angling, and fishing in the Anantnag region. The Lidder River is an important river in the Kashmir region of Jammu and Kashmir, being the second biggest tributary of the Jhelum River, the first being the Sind River. In Gurnar Khanabal, the Lidder River meets the Jhelum.

2.Kanimarg
One hour's hike from Baisaran, Kanimarg is a meadow densely forested with tall pine trees. This area is occupied by Gujjars, who are well-known in the town for providing horseback riding services. The spot is also great for camping and spending time around a bonfire with friends in the ambience of this location. As we travel through the meadow, the forest becomes denser and darker. Kanimarg is as picturesque as any other natural park in Kashmir, making it an ideal stopping point for trekkers.


3.ARU VALLEY:Aru Valley is located near Pahalgam, Kashmir.Aru Valley is a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, located in the Anantnag district, approximately 12 kilometres from Pahalgam. It attracts tourists due to its beautiful meadows, pure lakes, and mountains, and it also serves as a base camp for trekking to the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake.High mountain peaks and dense forests surround the Aru valley.

The valley serves as a meeting site for two streams of the Lidder River, which flow north and west through it. The valley is  home to a wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is abode to a variety of creatures including black bears, brown bears, Musk deer, Leopards,wolves, snow leopards, among others. It is an appealing tourist destination to visit on your Kashmir vacation not only for the breath taking scenery, but also for the variety of activities available.
When it is covered in snow during the winter, it becomes a popular destination for skiing and heli skiing. Best Time to Visit Aru Valley for Sightseeing is July through September.

4.CHANDANWARI:
Chandanwari is well-known for being the beginning location for the famed Hindu pilgrimage site, Shri Amarnath Yatra, which runs from June to August. March to April is the finest time to visit Chandanwari.  Chandanwari is about 15 kilometres from Pahalgam and takes about 30 minutes to get there.

5.BETAAB VALLEY:
Betaab Valley was formerly known as Hagan Valley or Hagoon, but came to be recognised by its current name after the film Betaab was made here. It is about 15 kilometres from Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district. On the path to the Amarnath Temple Yatra, the valley is located between Pahalgam and Chandanwari.

 It is one of Pahalgam's three angelic valleys, the other two being Aru and Chandanwari. Betaab valley is known for its sprawling rich grasslands, snow-capped mountains, and meandering streams. Apart from its breath taking beauty, the valley is also well-known as a popular hiking base and camping place for visitors looking to explore the adjacent regions or go on the Amarnath Yatra.

The valley's lush meadows, mountains, and dense vegetation, which offers lovely possibilities for sightseeing and is a photographer's pleasure, are what make it a popular tourist attraction in Jammu and Kashmir. The trees like chinar, deodar, pine, willows, and poplars, and the Lidder River, with its bluish/green waters, adds to its attractiveness. It is  ideal for picnics and sightseeing. The best time to visit Betaab Valley is from October to April.

6.Baisaran Valley

Baisaran Valley, located just 5 kilometres from Pahalgam in Kashmir's Anantnag district, is a popular tourist attraction known as "Mini-Switzerland" due to its stunning beauty. It's a hilltop green meadow dotted with lush vegetation. This popular alternative tourist destination in Jammu & Kashmir is ideal for people seeking peace and tranquillity in the company of nature. It also serves as a camping area for hikers heading to Tulian Lake.Pahalgam Old Village, Kanimarg, Kashmir Valley Point, Deon Valley and Dabyan are some of the well-known tourist attractions on the way to Baisaran. From here, you also get a bird's-eye view of Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley. The ideal time to visit Baisaran is determined by the type of experience you seek. If you want to appreciate the snow, go from January to March and if you want to witness the lush vegetation visit in the summer season.


7.TARSAR LAKE: Tarsar Lake is located near Pahalgam, Kashmir. Tarsar Lake, located in Aru in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, is surrounded by meadows studded with conifer trees, mountains, and breath taking  views of snow capped peaks.

The Tarsar lake, or Tar Sar, is an oligotrophic (poor in algal production due to low primary productivity, but with high drinking water quality) and alpine lake. The same can be said for Marsar Lake, which is known for its picturesque splendour. Both bodies of water are separated by a 13,000-foot mountain, yet because they share similar qualities and are so close in vicinity, they are commonly referred as twin sisters. They were given this name after Yusuf Shah Chak, the 16th century Kashmiri monarch, addressed the twin lakes in a sonnet to his beloved. The lake has an interesting fact about it. colour shifts throughout the day depending on the angle of the sun at dawn and dusk. The lake is only open during the summer, which is ideal for seeing a variety of species such as bar-headed goose, black bulbul, and Himalayan golden eagles. Tarsar is drained by an outlet stream that runs into the Lidder River near the seasonal village of Lidderwat. The lake and the blue colours of the water, surrounded by rugged terrain, make it look gorgeous and exceptional, particularly for nature enthusiasts.


8.Sheshnag Lake

Sheshnag Lake is located approximately 17 kilometres from Pahalgam at an elevation of 3,590 metres. Its greenish waters are home to a variety of fish, including brown trout, and it is surrounded on all sides by snow capped mountains. The lake's water is also thought to be of exceptional quality due to its limited algae production. The hike to it is highly picturesque, with amazing views of the surrounding mountain landscape and vast grassland terrain. Many legendary traditions surround the lake, one of which claims that it belongs to Sheshnag, Lord of the Snakes. Cloud bursts at the site formed a deep groove lined by mountains in ancient times. These mountains are covered in snow and ice sheets, which slowly melt, allowing water to flow into the deep groove and form a lake. A mythical spring from the renowned Kashmiri folk tale "Himal and Nagrai" is an hour's drive from Srinagar.


9.Thajiwas Glacier

Thajiwas Glacier, located at an elevation of 9,186 feet near Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir, is massive and endowed with beautiful beauty. It is one of the most stunning places you will ever see, overlooking the Thajiwas mountain and surrounded by meadows, fir trees, and frozen lakes. Tourists visit Thajiwas Glacier to take in the stunning scenery, create snowmen, and go sledding. You can also go for a little trek of 11 kilometres from the Amarnath Yatra's starting point at Chandanwari Base Camp. Thajiwas Glacier is 3 kilometres from Sonamarg. The site is a jewel of Jammu and Kashmir, with its gorgeous frozen lake, snow-covered mountains, fir and pine trees, and alpine meadows. Hiking and pony rides are among the activities available at the site. Tourists must tread carefully through the glacier, keeping an eye out for jagged icy edges or fragile ice. Tourists, on the other hand, can camp within little caves found on the glacier as they walk to the top.
Thajiwas is also blessed with a waterfall that travellers will encounter on their journey, as well as small streams that run through the area.


10.VISHANSAR LAKE:

Vishansar Lake, near Sonamarg, is a high-altitude lake endowed with spectacular natural beauty and pure environs. It is flanked on one side by tall jagged mountain peaks and on the other by lush green meadows. Apart from its natural beauty, what draws people to it in the summer are the prospects for trout and mahseer fishing. The lake remains frozen during the winter. Vishansar translates to "the lake of Vishnu". This lake is very holy to Kashmiri Pandits. It is home to a variety of fish, including the brown trout. During the winter, it freezes. The lake is bordered by beautiful, lush meadows in the summer, when local shepherds graze their flocks of sheep and goats. The lake, with its picturesque grandeur, snow-covered mountains, gorges filled with miniature glaciers, and alpine flower meadows, is a popular destination for trekkers in the Kashmir Valley. Krishansar Lake and glaciers feed it. The Vishansar Lake is the headwaters of the Neelum River, which runs north to Badoab and then west to Gurais along the Line of Control.

HOW DO I GET TO SRINAGAR?

BY AIR: Srinagar's Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport is well linked, with daily flights from Srinagar to Delhi, Mumbai, and Chandigarh. The airport is around 15 kilometres from the city centre. The most convenient method to get to Srinagar is from New Delhi.

BY TRAIN: The 270-kilometre journey from Jammu to Srinagar is normally completed in four hours.
6 – 7 hours. To reach Srinagar by train, take the Jammu Tawi or Udhampur railway stations. The stations are well connected to the rest of India. There are direct train connections from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Trivandrum. The train services are only available up to Jammu and Banihal. From Jammu to Srinagar, tourist cabs and public transportation would be readily available.

BY BUS:

National Highway 1A connects Srinagar to the rest of the country. J&K State Road Transport provides convenient bus service from Jammu.By bus, it takes about 8 hours.
Udhampur is 200 kilometres away, and the bus ride to Srinagar takes 6 hours.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE TULIAN LAKE TREK:
- Advisory Note: Due to the uncertainty of hiking in Kashmir, book flexible travel tickets that allow you to reschedule your journey at no additional cost.

- In the event of an emergency, treks can be rerouted to alternate trails.

- Trekkers over the age of 58 must submit a Treadmill Test report within seven days of registering.

-Alcohol consumption and smoking are prohibited during the trek.

-We strongly advise you to bring your own backpack, and the weight of the backpack should not exceed 9 kg.

DO'S AND DON'TS FOR THE TULIAN LAKE TREK:
Trekkers are urged not to litter in the mountains or meadows.

Avoid wearing heavy clothing and jewellery to stay as comfortable as possible.

Keep your backpack as light as possible. It should weigh no more than 9 kg, and your daypack should weigh no more than 5 kg.

Always keep your trek leader up to date about your whereabouts.
