JAMMU KASHMIR AREA
The total area of Jammu Kashmir is 222,236 sq. km. almost equal to that of the United Kingdoms. Of this 78,114 sq. km are under the control of Pakistan and 42,735 sq. km under the control of China. The north to south distance is approximately 640 km and the east-west distance is about 480 km. The state comprises mainly of three divisions-Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Of thisJammu has an area of 26,089 sq. km and Ladakh covers an area of 97,782 sq. km.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir consists mainly of mountainous and hilly landscape. A number of high-altitude mountain ranges are located in the state. World’s 2nd and 5th highest peak is located here. The state itself is located in the mighty Himalayan range of mountains. Besides mountains the state abounds in water bodies. The largest fresh water lake of Asia, Wullar Lake flows through Kashmir. River Jhelum, River Doodhganga, River Tawi, River Chenab, River Zanskar, River Suru, River Nubra, Dal Lake, Mansar Lake, Mansbal Lake, Pangong Lake, Tsomoriri Lake and numerous streams, springs, brooks and tarns flow in the state. Many orchards, gardens and meadows make the place too beautiful. Asia’s largest Tulilp garden is located in the summer capital, Srinagar. Much of the area is cultivable.
The state consists of a total of 22 districts. Of these Kashmir and Jammu has 10 districts each and Ladakh has 2 districts. The district wise area of Jammu Kashmir is as under:
