POPULATION OF KASHMIR
Jammu and Kashmir ranks 19th among the most populated states of India. Out of the three geographical divisions, Kashmir valley forms the major chunk of the entire population. The residents of the valley according to the latest survey conducted by the Government of India in parts under its control is 69,07,623 out of the total 12,548,926. It forms around 56% of the total population of the state. The population figures have shot up to 70 lakhs from 55 lakhs in a decade. Srinagar is the most populated area of the Kashmir valley with inhabitants of 1,269,751, while as Shopian district is the least populated area of the province with the inhabitants standing at 265,960.
Majority of the inhabitants resides in rural areas, hence making agriculture the primary occupation of the people. The inhabitants are predominantly Muslim with a significant number of Hindus, Sikhs and Christians. The district-wise population of Kashmir Valley is as under :
